Title: Abbot's Wood
Description: Once owned by Battle Abbey and now managed by the Forestry Commission, Abbot's Wood features bridleways, paths, tracks, ponds, wildlife and picnic tables.
Address: , , Nr Polegate, East Sussex
Located 7 miles (11km) north of Eastbourne, Abbot's Wood is managed by the Forestry Commission. Replanting started in 1953, with a quarter of the forest now supporting broad-leaf species (i.e. beech and oak) and the rest planted with conifers. As well as a 2-mile (3km) way-marked trail, numerous bridleways, paths and tracks take you through the woods. A quarter mile (400 metre) level surfaced path, with stopping / seating points, can be accessed from the car park; this is particularly suitable for the disabled.
Dating back to Henry I, Abbot's Wood was given to Battle Abbey and a number of thirteenth-century banks and ditches are still visible. The three ponds are believed to have been created in the area by Battle Abbey for use as fishponds. One of these, Wilmington Lake, is passed on a way-marked trail.
