Although the first fortification at Camber dates to 1512, work on the current structure did not start until 1539. Constructed to guard the River Rother, the building was completed in 1544.
Continued build up of shingle made the castle pretty useless (today it stands over a mile from the sea) and by 1640 it had been abandoned. Basically a complex gun platform, the symmetrical layout only incorporated basic accommodation although conventional features such as moats, drawbridges and portcullises were included.
Having been restored, the castle is now open to the public by guided tour only.
