St Michael and All Angels, Berwick
Places Of Worship
Title: St Michael and All Angels, Berwick
Description: Sitting at the foot of the Downs with its flint walls and shingled broach spire, the church dates from Norman times. In a derelict state when it was restored in 1857, an exploding bomb blew out the windows during the Second World War. Replaced with plain glass, Bishop George Bell of Chichester commissioned a number of wall paintings by Duncan Grant and Vanessa and Quentin Bell in 1943 - they once lived at the nearby Charleston Farmhouse. The paintings, for which local people modelled, can still be found inside.
