The Cowdray Ruins
Title: The Cowdray Ruins
Description: Obtained in 1542 by Sir Anthony Browne, the magnificent Cowdray House caught fire in 1793 and had burned to the ground within eight days. Browne had been granted Battle Abbey during the Dissolution of the Monasteries and it is said that a monk put a curse on his family for the bad treatment of the Abbey church. Although the curse took 250 years to work, the family did indeed ‘perish through fire and water’; the last of the Browne’s drowned while trying to shoot some falls on the Rhine.
