Although the sea has provided a living to the village of Selsey for many centuries, it is not without loss. The lifeboat station records show the many heroic launches and rescues that the crew have performed over the years.
When it was first established in 1860, Selsey Lifeboat Station spanned 20 feet. Thirty years later it had grown to a size of 800 feet including the walkway. The current structure, which was built in 1960, is also immense with the lifeboat station jutting out into the sea as it does.
The Lifeboat Museum, which can be found nearby, is filled with artefacts and history of Selsey and it's lifeboat.
